X-rays

X-rays produce quick, painless images of the body, especially bones, to detect fractures, chest conditions and much more, making them a cornerstone of diagnosis. Through our network of accredited hospitals and imaging specialists in India, we help international patients access fast, accurate imaging with expert interpretation.

X-rays in India

X-rays are one of the oldest and most widely used imaging tests in medicine, producing pictures of the inside of the body, especially bones, quickly and painlessly. From spotting fractures and chest conditions to guiding many procedures, X-rays are a fast, accessible and invaluable first look beneath the surface. They remain a cornerstone of diagnosis across nearly every area of medicine.

How they work

X-rays use a small amount of radiation that passes through the body and is absorbed differently by different tissues. Dense structures like bone absorb more and appear white, while softer tissues appear in shades of grey, creating an image that reveals what lies inside in seconds.

What they are used for

X-rays are excellent for examining bones, detecting fractures, joint problems and certain bone diseases. Chest X-rays assess the lungs and heart, and X-rays also help investigate the abdomen, teeth and many other areas, as well as guiding the placement of instruments during some procedures.

What to expect

Having an X-ray is quick and completely painless. You position the part of the body being examined against or near the imaging plate, hold still for a moment, and the image is captured almost instantly. There is no recovery time and you can carry on with your day immediately.

Safety

The radiation dose from a standard X-ray is very low, and the benefit of an accurate diagnosis generally far outweighs the small risk. Sensible precautions are taken, such as shielding where appropriate, and it is always important to tell staff if you are or might be pregnant.

Reading the result

A radiologist examines the image and reports the findings to your doctor, who explains what they mean for you. Where an X-ray raises further questions, additional imaging such as ultrasound, CT or MRI may be arranged to build a fuller picture.
