Caesarean Section in India
A caesarean section, or C-section, is the delivery of a baby through a surgical incision in the mother’s abdomen and womb. It may be planned in advance for medical reasons or carried out urgently during labour when it is the safest option for mother or baby. It is a common, well-established operation, and for many families it is the route to a safe, happy birth.
When it is needed
A C-section may be planned when there are reasons that make vaginal birth riskier, such as the baby lying in an awkward position, certain placental issues, multiple babies, or particular maternal health conditions. It may also become necessary during labour if progress stalls or there are concerns about the baby’s wellbeing.
Planned versus emergency
A planned caesarean is scheduled and calm, with time to prepare. An emergency caesarean is decided during labour when a prompt delivery becomes the safest choice. Although emergency in name, it is a controlled, practised procedure carried out by an experienced team to protect mother and baby.
What the procedure involves
Most C-sections are performed under a spinal or epidural anaesthetic, so the mother is awake but comfortable and can meet her baby straight away. Through a low incision in the abdomen and womb, the baby is delivered, after which the layers are carefully closed. The operation itself is usually fairly quick.
Recovery
Recovery from a caesarean takes longer than from a vaginal birth, as it is major surgery. A short hospital stay is usual, and you will be supported with pain relief and advice on caring for the wound, lifting, and gradually returning to activity over the following weeks.
Caring for mother and baby
A good maternity team supports the whole experience, helping with feeding, recovery and bonding, and answering your questions. Whether planned or unplanned, the priority throughout is a safe birth and a healthy start for both mother and baby.
