Bone Scan: A Detailed Guide to Nuclear Medicine Imaging

A bone scan uses a safe radioactive tracer to detect bone problems, from hidden fractures and infection to cancer spread, often before X-rays can. Through our network of accredited hospitals and imaging specialists in India, we help international patients access sensitive, whole-body imaging with expert interpretation.

Bone Scan in India

A bone scan is a sensitive imaging test that can detect changes in bone long before they show up on an ordinary X-ray. Using a tiny, safe amount of radioactive tracer, it highlights areas where bone is unusually active, helping to investigate unexplained pain, possible fractures, infection, or the spread of cancer to the bones. It gives doctors a whole-body view in a single test.

How it works

A small amount of a safe radioactive tracer is injected into a vein and travels through the bloodstream to the bones. Areas where bone is repairing or unusually active take up more tracer and appear as bright spots on the scan, pinpointing where something is happening.

What it can find

Bone scans are used to investigate unexplained bone pain, detect stress fractures that X-rays may miss, identify bone infection, assess certain arthritis and bone conditions, and check whether cancer has spread to the bones. Their great strength is high sensitivity across the whole skeleton.

What to expect

After the tracer is injected, there is usually a wait of a few hours to let it settle into the bones, during which you can relax. The scan itself involves lying still while a camera passes over you. It is painless, and the tracer dose is very low and clears from the body naturally.

Is it safe?

The amount of radioactivity used is small and considered safe, leaving the body within a day or two, helped by drinking plenty of fluids. The procedure is non-invasive apart from the injection, and side effects are very rare.

Interpreting the findings

Bright areas on a scan show increased bone activity but do not, by themselves, say exactly why, since many causes can look similar. Your doctor reads the scan alongside your symptoms and other tests, sometimes adding further imaging, to reach a confident conclusion.

How we help

When bone symptoms need investigating thoroughly, the right imaging makes all the difference. We connect you with accredited hospitals and nuclear-medicine and imaging specialists in India who can perform and interpret bone scans expertly, and coordinate any follow-up, so you get clear answers efficiently.
