The CA 125 test is a blood test that measures a protein which can be raised in some cancers, particularly ovarian cancer. It is used mainly to monitor known ovarian cancer and its response to treatment, and to help investigate symptoms or findings in certain situations. Because the level can rise for many non-cancerous reasons too, it is always interpreted carefully and in context.

What it measures

CA 125 is a protein that may be present at higher levels in the blood when ovarian cancer is active, and sometimes with other cancers. The test measures this level, giving information that can support diagnosis and, especially, the monitoring of treatment over time.

Its main uses

CA 125 is most valuable in following women already diagnosed with ovarian cancer, where a falling level can indicate that treatment is working and a rising level may signal a need to reassess. It may also be used to help evaluate a pelvic mass or certain symptoms, alongside imaging and examination.

Why context matters

The level can be raised by many benign conditions, including endometriosis, fibroids, pelvic inflammation, menstruation and pregnancy. For this reason, CA 125 is not used as a standalone screening test in the general population, and a single result is never interpreted in isolation.

It is a straightforward blood test, requiring only a small sample from the arm, usually with no special preparation, and results return within a short time. Repeated measurements over time are often more informative than any single value, particularly when tracking treatment.
