Bilirubin Test: Understanding Your Liver and Blood Health

The bilirubin blood test measures a pigment processed by the liver, helping investigate jaundice and assess liver health and red blood cell breakdown. Through our network of accredited hospitals and specialists in India, we help international patients access accurate testing and clear interpretation of results.

Bilirubin Testing in India

A bilirubin test is a simple blood test that measures a yellow pigment produced when the body breaks down old red blood cells. The liver normally processes and clears bilirubin, so the level in your blood is a useful window into how well your liver is working and whether red blood cells are breaking down too quickly. It is often the first clue behind unexplained jaundice.

What bilirubin tells you

Bilirubin is created as worn-out red blood cells are recycled, then handled by the liver and removed from the body. When levels rise, it can point to a liver that is struggling, a blockage in the bile ducts, or red blood cells breaking down faster than normal. The test helps narrow down which.

Why it is done

Doctors order a bilirubin test to investigate jaundice, the yellowing of skin and eyes, and to check liver health more generally. It is also used to monitor known liver conditions and, very commonly, to assess jaundice in newborn babies, where it guides safe and timely care.

Understanding the two types

Bilirubin comes in two forms, often reported separately. The balance between them gives valuable clues: a rise in one type tends to suggest problems with red blood cell breakdown, while a rise in the other points more toward the liver or bile ducts. Your doctor reads these together.

How the test is done

It is a routine blood test requiring only a small sample from the arm, and in newborns a tiny heel-prick. There is usually little or no special preparation, and results are typically available quickly, making it a fast and convenient check.

What the results mean

A raised level is a signal to look further, not a diagnosis in itself. Your doctor interprets it alongside other liver tests, your symptoms and your history to work out the cause and decide whether any treatment or further investigation is needed.
