ACL Reconstruction: Purpose, Procedure & Recovery

ACL reconstruction rebuilds a torn knee ligament using a keyhole graft technique, restoring stability for daily life and sport. Through our network of accredited orthopaedic and sports-medicine centres in India, we connect international patients with expert surgeons and structured rehabilitation at a fraction of the usual cost.

ACL Reconstruction in India

The anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, is one of the key stabilising bands inside the knee, and a torn ACL is among the most common serious injuries in sport. Because the ligament rarely heals on its own, reconstruction rebuilds it using a graft, restoring the stability you need to walk, pivot and play with confidence. India’s orthopaedic and sports-medicine centres perform this surgery to a very high standard, usually through keyhole techniques.

Why the ligament is rebuilt, not repaired

A torn ACL has a poor blood supply and cannot reliably knit back together, so surgeons replace it rather than stitch it. A short length of tendon, taken either from your own knee or from a donor, is threaded through small tunnels in the thigh and shin bones and anchored in place. Over the following months it gradually matures into a strong, living ligament.

Who benefits most

Reconstruction is usually advised for active people, athletes and anyone whose knee gives way during everyday movement. It is especially important when the injury sits alongside damage to the meniscus or other ligaments, and for younger patients in whom long-term instability can lead to early arthritis. The aim is a stable knee you can trust.

How the surgery is done

The procedure is keyhole, or arthroscopic: the surgeon works through two or three small openings using a tiny camera and fine instruments. The damaged ligament is cleared, the graft is positioned with precision, and fixation devices hold it firmly while it heals. Most people go home the same day or the next.

The road to recovery

Rehabilitation is where the real work happens, and it is gradual. Early weeks focus on calming swelling and regaining gentle movement; strength and balance build over the following months; and a careful, staged return to running and sport usually comes between six and nine months. Rushing this stage is the main cause of re-injury.

What results to expect

Success rates are high, with the great majority of patients regaining a stable knee and returning to the activities they value. A consistent physiotherapy programme matters just as much as the operation itself, and committing to it fully is the surest path to a strong, dependable knee.
